UTTA provides language and music courses both for school pupils and for teacher training purposes.

Briefly, UTTA courses and accredited courses must conform to the following general descriptors:

1. The course is taught by a trained teaching professional (PGCE).
2. The course is taught by a languages specialist of at least degree level.
3. The course is designed to be taught in an immersive / active context.
4. The course includes strong elements of cultural assimilation.
5. The course includes dramatic and musical features as vehicles.
6. The course incorporates routine testing and self-testing.
7. Role play is an integral part of the course.
8. Numeric skills are an integral part of the course.
9. Humour is valued in the course material.

 

Qualifications in spoken language skills with a written component are delivered as one unit of 10 learning
hours . A 20-hour course is also available. Both lead to an UTTA certificate.

The higher level course provides the 20-hour language requirement of the Welsh Baccalaureate Core.

1. Communicating Personal Information – asking and answering questions on personal information, e.g. name, address, telephone number, interests

2. Social Activities – dealing with daily activities like shopping, eating out, travelling

3. Organising and Planning – requesting basic information relating to planning and organising activities, e.g. organising a meeting, arranging a conference, arranging
a business trip

4. Giving and Receiving Information and Instructions – e.g. asking or providing directions to places

5. Education and Employment – e.g. discussing educational systems, requirements for jobs

How are UTTA Qualifications in Languages assessed?

Each unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. Courses are flexibly run to suit centre requirements.
